The 9(8/1) means there are nine total leaves in the leaf spring pack. Eight leaves arched together and a shorter, flat one on the bottom.
This is called a two stage spring which has space between the ends of the bottom leaf and the upper section. When the truck is loaded the space will close and the bottom leaf will engage to give support.
